YORK – Looking to capitalize on recent momentum that had boosted its Division 3 playoff hopes, the Bruton Panthers took to their home field on a homecoming Friday with an upset in mind as the Bay Rivers District co-leader York Falcons made their way to the “Pit.”
But on the second play of the game, Falcons quarterback Austin Norman faked a handoff and darted 58 yards up the middle to the Bruton 15. That sparked the visitors, who followed up with a workmanlike offensive effort that helped them cruise to a 39-7 victory.
York (7-1, 6-1 in the BRD) maintained a share of first place, while Bruton (2-6, 1-6) retains the faintest of hopes for a playoff berth, which took a hit because of the loss.
After Norman’s long run, Marcus Wakelyn capped the drive by breaking through an initial tackle and plowing 2 yards into the end zone for the Falcons' first score. Norman’s toss to Dalton Dye amounted to a 2-point conversion and gave York an 8-0 edge.
The Panthers took advantage of an interception by cornerback Richard Taylor that gave them the ball in York territory. Kajoun Johnson took a sweep to the left side, broke a tackle and galloped 22 yards to the end zone for Bruton’s only score.
From there, it was all York. Norman started a second-quarter burst, finishing a nine-play, 61 yard drive with a 1-yard keeper for a touchdown. Hunter Strack tacked on a 25-yard field goal, and Chris Spruill found the end zone from 2 yards out, helping York gain a 25-7 halftime advantage.
Tywuan Lewis practically put the game away on York’s first possession of the second half, outsprinting the Bruton defense 76 yards for a score. Wakelyn’s second touchdown, a 6-yarder, finished the scoring.
The York defense was particularly tough in the second half. After allowing a 35-yard run by Kapri Doucet, the Falcons held Bruton to minus-21 yards for the rest of the contest. Overall, the Panthers gained a meager 75 yards.
Both Norman (14 carries for 125 yards) and Tywuan Lewis (five for 100) eclipsed the century mark in rushing as the Falcons rumbled for 312 of their 372 total yards on the ground.
