Thomas Whinnett and Theo Baker combined to go 9-of-11 on 3-pointers in the second half to lift Christopher Newport to a 96-86 win against SUNY-Old Westbury in the final game of the Cactus Jam in Phoenix, Ariz. Baker had a career-high 27 points, with 19 coming in the second half, and Whinnett had 19 after being held scoreless in the first half. Tied at 43 at intermission, the Captains went on 25-7 run to take a nine-point lead with 9:24 remaining. Mark Blasingame added 16 points and 12 rebounds for the Captains (5-5). Davon Barton did not score in the first half for the Captains, but ended the night with eight points and 12 assists. Lester Prosper had 33 points to lead Old Westerbury.
Illinois 71, (9) Purdue 67, OTMike Tisdale scored 18 points and visiting Illinois defeated Purdue. Mike Davis scored 12 points for the Fighting Illini (13-1), who won their seventh straight. JaJuan Johnson had 16 points and 15 rebounds for Purdue (11-3).
