Bay Rivers District boys track preview
Bay Rivers boys track
TOP TEAMS Jamestown, Smithfield, Grafton.
TOP RETURNING ATHLETES Ryan Judkins, Warhill (sprints); Greg Farrell, Jamestown (middle distances); Anthony Green, Jamestown (middle distances); Kyle King, Grafton (middle distances); David Gunnerson, Grafton (middle distances); Colin Mearns, Jamestown (distance); Andrew Colley, Jamestown (distance); John Holt, Jamestown (distance); DeAngelo Scales, Lafayette (hurdles, jumps); Nick Durante, Jamestown (pole vault); Cornell Jones, Smithfield (long jump, triple jump); Boden Fuller, Smithfield (shot put).
THREE STORYLINES 1. Can Jamestown find more points? In the state indoor meet, the Eagles finished second, 26 points shy of champion Louisa County.
2. Is 9 minutes within sight? Only one Peninsula runner has broken 9 minutes in the 3,200-meter race. But given the right conditions, Jamestown's Andrew Colley, Colin Mearns or John Holt could challenge that mark.
3. Can Smithfield find depth? The Packers finished second in the district indoor meet with only four athletes scoring — Cornell Jones, Clemente Jenkins, Saquon Moody and Boden Fuller.
THE BUZZ Add an outstanding pole-vaulter and some sprinters and hurdlers to the outstanding group of distance runners, and Jamestown is the preseason favorite to follow up its indoor district championship with an outdoor title. The Eagles won the indoor meet, easily beating runner-up Smithfield.
