Tabb grinds out big victory, beats Lafayette 38-17
When facing Tabb, one must prepare for a bruising ground game. If senior Corey Patrick doesn't hurt you, fellow senior Dillon Biagas might. For Lafayette on Friday night, it was both hurting the Rams.
Patrick ran for 207 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns, while Biagas had 92 yards and a pair of scores on eight carries. The Tigers surged for 31 straight points after the first quarter en route to a 38-17 victory over Lafayette at Bailey Field.
In the first quarter, Lafayette opened with a strong defensive stand as junior Ray Kindley intercepted a Rex Harrison pass and gave the Rams possession at the Tabb 34. After three runs placed the ball on the 19, the Rams' offense stalled, and freshman Jaquan Hayes nailed a 25-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 5:50 left.
Tabb didn't waste much time in answering. The Tigers went five plays covering 54 yards, with Patrick going the last 23 on his first of three touchdowns. Harrison set that score up by connecting with tight end Jacob Kimball on a 29-yard pass to bring the ball to the Rams' 24. Two plays from there, Patrick broke through and scampered to the end zone with 4:07 left in the first.
Lafayette responded quickly as well, bringing thoughts of another Bailey Field shootout. The Rams went 80 yards in five plays to take a 10-7 lead on a 40-yard run from William Capers. Brandon Jones helped set up that score by taking off on a 24-yard run around right end to put the ball at the Tabb 40. Hayes' PAT made it 10-7 Lafayette with 1:48 left in the first.
From there, the Tigers put the offense into overdrive. They scored on three of their next four possessions to close the first half. Biagas finished a 75-yard drive by bulling his way in from the 6 for a 14-10 advantage with 10:22 left in the half.
The Tigers clawed to another touchdown as Patrick broke off a 69-yard run, outracing four Rams defenders to the end zone with 5:34 left.
A 37-yard field goal from Nick Henderson made it 24-10 at halftime.
In the second half, the Tigers cracked the scoreboard again as Patrick put a cap on his 207-yard night with an 81-yard TD jaunt.
Not to be outdone, Biagas finished the scoring for Tabb with a 33-yard run three plays into the fourth quarter, giving the hosts a 38-10 lead with 10:46 left.
Lafayette's offense sputtered in the second half. The Rams gained their initial first down with 2:51 left on a drive that resulted in the second TD for Capers, a 12-yard run.
