Phoebus linebacker LoVante' Battle couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"When I looked up there," he said, "I thought they were playing with the scoreboard, or something."
That would have been one explanation. Instead, it was a perfect (or imperfect, depending on your vantage point) storm in which Phoebus could do no wrong and Denbigh could do nothing right.
With a 49-point first quarter, the likes of which nobody remembered ever seeing, the Phantoms rolled to a 77-0 win Saturday afternoon at Todd Stadium. Phoebus (10-0, 9-0 Peninsula District) scored on its first play from scrimmage, a 48-yard run by Shawne Alston, and floored it from there.
"That was just unbelievable," Phantoms coach
said. "We've never scored 49 in a quarter before. I don't know if I've ever seen 49 in a quarter before."
And Denbigh coach
"I've never seen anything like that," he said.
Alston's run started it, but Denbigh (4-6, 4-5) did plenty to help. Quarterback Sam Franklin threw two interceptions — one Battle returned for a touchdown, the other set up a first-and-10 at the
' 14-yard line. Denbigh also botched a kickoff, which Phoebus' T.J. Boyd recovered.
Phantoms quarterback Tajh Boyd threw two touchdown passes in the quarter, both to wideout Omyn Newkirk. Denbigh was so eager for the quarter to end that as it tried to run the clock out, it ended up being flagged for delay of game.
"It all goes back to not having them prepared to play," Harris said. "And when that happens against a team like Phoebus, that's how you're going to look. We couldn't catch kickoffs, we couldn't catch the ball, we couldn't do anything."
It was 63-0 at halftime, which set the running clock in motion for the entire second half. And Phoebus ended up with its seventh shutout of the season.
"Our main goal this week was a zero on the scoreboard, and we picked it up," lineman Dominik Davenport said.
"Our defense is probably the best I've played on in my four years. I love it. Can't get any better than this."
The Phantoms did get a scare — the day after
, no less — with just less than 11 minutes left in the second quarter. Tajh Boyd reinjured his left knee while making a tackle following an interception.
He watched the rest of game from the sideline. Afterward, he was walking without a limp.
"He's fine," Dee said. "He went in there and tried to make the tackle."
With the program's second consecutive undefeated regular season in the books, next for Dee is figuring out his first-round opponent in the Eastern Region Division 5 playoffs.
Nothing is official until the coaches meet today in Norfolk. But the Phantoms will be a No. 1 or 2 seed and will host No. 7 Churchland or No. 8 Warwick on Friday at Darling Stadium.
