After visiting Virginia and Virginia Tech recently, Fork Union Military Academy offensive lineman Jonathan McLaughlin has committed to the Hokies. The website VTScoop247 first reported McLaughlin's decision Thursday afternoon.
A 2011 graduate of Mauldin High in South Carolina, McLaughlin played in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas all-star game that summer after signing with East Carolina. But he did not qualify academically and enrolled Fork Union, where he drew additional attention and played with Tech commits Drew Harris and Jerome Wright.
Listed at 6-foot-4, 288 pounds, McLaughlin is the third offensive linemen to pledge to Tech. The others are Parker Osterloh of Warhill High and Braxton Pfaff of Liberty Christian in
Offensive linemen rarely play as true freshmen, even those who have prepped a year. Starting tackles Vinston Painter and Nick Becton, and reserve guard/center Michael Via are the only senior offensive linemen on the Hokies' depth chart for the Dec. 28 Russell Athletic Bowl against Rutgers.
