Teel Time: New projected NCAA bracket to reflect bid thief St. Bonaventure

After more than a week of conference championship craziness, finally a bid thief: St. Bonaventure  of the Atlantic 10 this afternoon became the first surprise winner of a league tournament to swipe a bid from a bubble team.

The fourth-seeded Bonnies defeated Xavier 67-56, which likely was in the field regardless. By earning the A-10's automatic bid and pushing Xavier into the at-large pool, St. Bonaventurepushed a team out of the NCAA field.

In my projected bracket, that team is Mississippi State, whose profile wouldn't merit consideration in most years anyway.

So shed no tears.

One word about the field below: I would like to see Colonial Athletic Association regular-season champ Drexel in the field. But the selection committee's history says it will penalize the Dragons for a weak non-conference schedule.

We'll know in about 90 minutes.

Here we go by seeds. There are six No. 16s – two are placed in the bracket; the other four are paired in opening-round games in Dayton, with the winners advancing to the main bracket.

Similarly, the last four at-large selections play in Dayton, giving us six No. 12 seeds.
