Classic cars for a modern epidemic
Residents can check out some super cool classic cars in Costa Mesa tonight to help a fledgling university in Zambia, a landlocked African country that’s struggling with the AIDS epidemic and poverty.
Crevier Classic Cars at 365 Clinton St. is playing host to Northrise University, which has a satellite office in Costa Mesa and whose mission is to educate poor African students so they can become productive people in their impoverished country and in return help their fellow countrymen.
Roughly 300 people are expected to attend the fundraising event, which starts at 5 p.m., said Jim Clark, manager of the classic car brokerage company and storage facility.
With more than 30,000 square feet, Clark said, the facility often steps in and provides space for fundraisers, giving the attendees a chance to glimpse some of the more primo vehicles around.
“But the point,” Clark said, “is to come out and honor Northrise University. They could use some help.”
A sit-down dinner will be provided during the live auction. A silent auction will precede the dinner.
According to Kathy Pipkin, the organizer of the event, said all proceeds will go to Northrise University in Ndola in the northern part of the country, where 55% of the population lives on $2 a day or less and 10% of the population is HIV positive.
Northrise University was founded in 2004.
Since then, 74 students have graduated in information technology and theology, receiving Associate Arts degrees
Many of these students have found jobs and are supporting their families and others in their communities, according to the website.
Moffat and Doreen Zimba, both of Zambia, founded the university after Moffat Zimba, 50, received his doctorate in theology at Fuller Seminary in Pasadena. Doreen ended up getting her MBA.
It was always a dream of the two to create a university because the two are from the country.
They met up with a pastor at Grace Fellowship Church in Costa Mesa, where Zimba received financial support from the church to build the university in Zambia.
