Local chef heads to Taste of NFL at the Super Bowl

Football and good food go together seamlessly; which is why fighting for hunger should be such a worthy cause to all NFL fans.

The Taste of the NFL’s Kick Hunger Challenge is back for its 25th year of fundraising for nationwide hunger. The charity works by separating the donations into teams. For example, those who donate to the San Diego Chargers team will see those funds directly disbursed back into the San Diego community, through local food banks. The challenge will act as a competition between all 32 NFL sectors to see who can raise the most proceeds.

This year’s Kick Hunger event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl, making it bigger than ever before. The main party is the Party with a Purpose event which is held the night before the Super Bowl. The soiree will take place at Cow Palace in San Francisco on Saturday, Feb. 6. The night will consist of decadent food, wine and fun, as current and former NFL players team up with 32 chefs from each sector to raise money for the cause. There will be over 45,000 tastings and about 2,500 guests in attendance.

Chef Jonathan Hale of The Prado at Balboa Park restaurant will be representing San Diego and the San Diego Chargers team at the Party with a Purpose event.

Chef Hale has been the Executive Chef at The Prado at Balboa Park since 2010 and is thrilled at the chance to extend his passion for cooking toward such a meaningful cause. Hale is also looking forward to getting the community involved in the event.

“The Prado is running a special promo for Taste of the NFL’s season-long Kick Hunger Challenge campaign. A dollar will be donated to the San Diego Food Bank for every spicy calamari fries (a house favorite) ordered, or $1 on select bottles of wine off the menu are ordered. Chargers fans can also enter the restaurant’s raffle for $1 (per) raffle entry for an opportunity to win an official Chargers helmet signed by Hall of Fame Tight End Kellen Winslow, Sr. These promotions are happening right now, and run through Feb. 7,” Hale said.
