Kellen Winslow II posts bail, released from jail

A day after a Vista judge agreed to set bail for Kellen Winslow II, who is accused of kidnapping and rape, the former NFL player posted bond and was released from jail Friday morning, July 13.

Winslow had been jailed without bail since his arrest June 14. But on Thursday, July 12, following a one-and-a half-day preliminary hearing, Superior Court Judge Harry Elias set bail at $2 million with conditions for Winslow II, who is the son of legendary Chargers tight-end Kellen Winslow.

The younger Winslow, who was released about 11 a.m. July 13, must wear a GPS tracking device and stay away from his accusers. He also turned over his passport to court officials July 12. The prosecutor had initially said house arrest was a condition, but that is not reflected on the court docket.

Winslow II, 34, is charged in two cases alleging sex-related crimes. He has pleaded not guilty to all the charges.

At the end of the hearing, Elias found enough evidence to order Winslow II to face trial in the first case. That case includes felony kidnapping and sexual assault charges, as well as misdemeanor counts that include indecent exposure and trespassing.

Winslow II is accused of kidnapping and raping a 54-year-old hitchiker in March and a 58-year-old homeless woman in May.

He is also accused of exposing himself to a 58-year-old woman who was gardening in front of her home, which is on the same street where he lives. Two final charges are misdemeanor counts accusing him of trespassing into the mobile homes of two elderly women on separate days in June.

On July 12, prosecutors filed a second case, this one alleging that Winslow II raped an unconscious 17-year-old girl in 2003. He was 19 at the time.

His preliminary hearing in that case is set for Aug. 17.

Winslow II was born and raised in San Diego. He attended Patrick Henry and Scripps Ranch high schools before heading to the University of Miami.

A first-round draft pick in 2004, Winslow II played in the NFL for 10 seasons. He started with the Cleveland Browns for five years, then played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three years. He went on to play one season each for the New England Patriots and New York Jets.
