Composers Andrew Norman, Ted Hearne joining USC faculty

USC’s music school will be getting a double infusion of hip Brooklyn talent.

Composers Andrew Norman and Ted Hearne are joining the Thornton School of Music as full-time professors. Norman will begin his new job in the fall, and Hearne will start next year.

Both composers are in their early 30s and live in Brooklyn, though they will be relocating to Southern California for their new jobs, according to a USC spokeswoman.

In recent years, Norman has worked with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra as its composer in residence. He studied at USC and Yale University before embarking on his professional composing career.

Norman was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in music for his piece “The Companion Guide to Rome.”

Hearne presented his piece “Stem” this spring at Walt Disney Concert Hall as part of the Brooklyn Festival. The piece was a co-commission with the L.A. Philharmonic.

The USC spokeswoman said that Norman will be starting in the fall at half the normal course load due to prior composing commitments. Hearne will start with a full slate of classes in the fall 2014 semester.
