The unforgiving nature of competitive ballroom dancing is revealed in "Strictly Ballroom," which follows ballroom dancer Scott Hastings as he strives to win the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix Dancing Championship. When Scott and his partner lose a competition because he incorporates his own dance steps into their routine, he also loses said parter to the rival who beat him. He finds a new dance partner in Fran, a beginner dancer at his parents' studio, who introduces paso doble steps into their routine. Baz Luhrmann's 1992 film is based on a play Luhrmann originally developed while a student and later expanded into a production at Sydney's Wharf Theater in 1988. The musical adaptation of the film opened at the Sydney Lyric Theatre in March for a run that is planned to continue to June.
