The Broadway cast recording of “Kinky Boots” won the Grammy Award for musical theater album on Sunday. Cyndi Lauper, who wrote the songs for the musical, accepted the award, given out as part of a pre-telecast ceremony at the Nokia Theatre in downtown Los Angeles.

“Kinky Boots,” which has been running at the Al Hirschfeld Theater in New York since March, won the Tony Award for new musical last year. The show, based on the 2005 British movie of the same name, tells the story of a drag queen who helps to rescue a floundering shoe factory. The show stars Billy Porter and Stark Sands in the roles originated on-screen by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Joel Edgerton.

Lauper won a Tony for original score for the musical. The Queens, N.Y., native first won a Grammy in 1985 as new artist of the year. This year, she hosted the pre-telecast ceremony during which she won her “Kinky Boots” Grammy.
