“The Hateful Eight” is set in Wyoming after the Civil War and chronicles the tense adventures of bounty hunters and outlaws. A buffalo coat worn by Russell, who plays John “The Hangman” Ruth, was based on an item in the Autry’s collection.

“I was able to see it in person and examine the construction from the 1880s,” costume designer Courtney Hoffman said of the coat in the exhibition announcement Thursday. “I’m thrilled that the film’s iconic coat will be on view at the Autry, a museum that houses one of the nation’s most significant collections of western film artifacts.”

In addition to the Hangman’s coat, which Hoffman calls “Big Boy,” the display includes the character’s cream-colored fur hat, a leather gun belt decorated with conchas and his boots. Also featured will be the full costumes worn by Maj. Marquis “The Bounty Hunter” Warren (Jackson) and Daisy “The Prisoner” Domergue (Leigh).

Jackson’s costume includes a black felt hat, a navy-and-yellow wool cape coat, a suit and scarf as well as a red silk cravat and black leather boots. His gun belt, holster, watch chain and gloves also will be on view.

Leigh’s costume features a fur hat, an embroidered blue walking outfit and leather boots.

The installation also will showcase prop firearms. The display can be seen in the Autry’s Imagination Gallery.
