Jazz for Obama concert set for Tuesday night

With Kid Rock on the road stumping for Paul Ryan and a variety of other musicians having tacitly endorsed President Obama by asking the Romney campaign not to play their music for campaign events, jazz artists have joined in the political season with a fundraising concert planned for Tuesday night.

Scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Symphony Space on the Upper West Side in New York City, the Jazz for Obama concert features a lineup of jazz heavyweights that includes Joe Lovano, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gretchen Parlato and Christian McBride, as well as a pair of longtime veterans of the music in guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Roy Haynes. Proceeds from the show will go toward the Obama-Biden presidential campaign.

Full ensembles have not been announced, and the bill also promises a number of “special guests” on hand. A Jazz for Obama concert was also held in New York City in 2008 with players that included Haynes, Brad Mehldau and Charlie Haden, among others.

The concert comes just days after Sunday night’s pop-tilted concert in Los Angeles that featured Katy Perry, Bon Jovi, Stevie Wonder and an appearance by the president himself in a campaign fundraiser organized by the Obama campaign.

While tickets for Obama’s L.A. event reportedly cost more than $250 (with an exception of a $44 price for attendees under 40), general admission tickets for Jazz for Obama are listed for $100 and students and seniors can attend for $50.

President Obama has talked about being a fan of jazz (Esperanza Spalding performed at the White House in 2009), and his interest sparked a recent Facebook page that featured his image used in various Reid Miles-designed Blue Note album covers.
