Joan Stein memorial scheduled for Oct. 8 in L.A.

A memorial for the late theater producer Joan Stein has been set for Oct. 8 in Los Angeles. The service will be held at the Brentwood Theatre on the Veterans Affairs grounds at 11301 Wilshire Blvd.

The memorial is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. Organizers said it will be attended by Stein’s friends, family and colleagues.

Stein died in August at the age of 59 following a battle with appendiceal cancer. Her theater career spanned Broadway and L.A., and included long-running local productions of A. R. Gurney’s “Love Letters,” “Forever Plaid” and Steve Martin’s “Picasso at the Lapin Agile.”

Her Broadway credits included the 1999 drama “Side Man,” for which she received a Tony Award for new play.

Stein had recently been working with the Reprise Theater Co. to help the company re-organize after it suspended its mainstage operations earlier this year, according to a spokesman for Reprise.

For 10 years, Stein was the co-head of the Canon Theatre in Beverly Hills, working alongside her producing partner Susan Dietz. Stein left the theater in 2000 to pursue a career in television; the theater closed in 2004.

Stein helped to lead more than 80 stage productions during her career. Her recent projects included “Motherhood Out Loud,” which ran at Primary Stages in New York and at the Geffen Playhouse in 2011 under the title “In Mother Words.” She also produced “Standing on Ceremony,” a play about gay marriage, that ran at the Largo at the Coronet in West Hollywood.
