Jon Hamm helps launch ‘Humor Abuse’ Kickstarter campaign

“Humor Abuse” -- the comedic memoir play by Lorenzo Pisoni that recently opened at the Mark Taper Forum -- has received a significant publicity boost thanks to a related Kickstarter campaign launched with the help of “Mad Men” actor Jon Hamm.

Organizers of the Kickstarter campaign hope to raise at least $60,000 toward a documentary movie that will be made about Pisoni, an actor who grew up in a family of circus performers. The campaign launched earlier this week and is scheduled to conclude in 24 more days.

Hamm and his girlfriend actress Jennifer Westfeldt have lent their name to the Kickstarter campaign. Westfeldt worked with Pisoni earlier this year in the play “The Explorers Club” at the Manhattan Theater Club in New York, and became friends with the actor.

Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles is producing the current run of “Humor Abuse” at the Taper, but is not involved in the Kickstarter campaign.

“Humor Abuse” features Pisoni recounting his upbringing in The Pickle Family Circus and performing as clown alongside his father. Organizers of the Kickstarter campaign said that the planned documentary will expand on the themes that Pisoni presents in his one-man show.

The documentary is also expected to capture Pisoni performing his solo show on stage, and will also feature interviews with his family members. Pisoni’s sister, Gypsy Snider, is a co-founder and performer with the Montreal circus group Les Sept Doigts de la Main.

“Humor Abuse” is scheduled to run at the Taper through Nov. 3. The play was previously performed in New York in 2009 at the Manhattan Theater Club.
