Judd Hirsch will fill the shoes of the late Richard Griffiths in the revival of Neil Simon’s “The Sunshine Boys” coming to the Ahmanson Theatre in September.

Griffiths had been scheduled to costar alongside Danny DeVito at the Ahmanson, but the veteran British stage actor died in March at age 65 from complications following heart surgery. Griffiths and DeVito performed in the play together last year in London at the Savoy Theatre.

Hirsch and DeVito will play Willie Clark and Al Lewis, an old vaudeville team reunited after many years to do a TV special. The two actors will experience a professional reunion of their own -- they previously starred together in the popular sitcom “Taxi.”

“The Sunshine Boys” is scheduled to run Sept. 24 to Nov. 3, with the official opening night scheduled for Oct. 2. Thea Sharrock, who directed the London production, is returning to stage the play in L.A. The revival received favorable reviews when it debuted at the Savoy.

Hirsch appeared last year at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica in a production of the play “Freud’s Last Session.” He is the winner of two Tony Awards, for “Conversations with My Father” in 1992 and “I’m Not Rappaport” in 1986.
