‘Little Miss Sunshine’ musical heading off-Broadway

The “Little Miss Sunshine” minibus is fueling up to head cross-country again, this time from the West Coast to New York.

The stage musical based on the Oscar-winning 2006 movie will reportedly open at the off-Broadway Second Stage Theatre in New York next season, with previews expected to begin in October. A spokesman for the company didn’t respond to a request to confirm the news, which was first reported Wednesday by the New York Times.

Laura DiLorenzo, director of marketing and communications at Second Stage, said she was unable to comment on the matter.

“Little Miss Sunshine” debuted in 2011 at the La Jolla Playhouse. The musical was written by the Tony Award-winning team of James Lapine and William Finn. The cast at La Jolla included Hunter Foster, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Dick Latessa and Georgi James.

Actor Malcolm Gets left the production part-way through its run in La Jolla. Gets played the role of Uncle Frank, the depressed Proust scholar whose bandaged wrists indicate a failed suicide attempt. (In the movie, the character was played by Steve Carell.) The actor’s absence was due to a throat condition, according to the La Jolla Playhouse and the actor’s representative.

Carole Rothman, artistic director of Second Stage, told the New York Times that the musical was overhauled following its run in La Jolla.

Second Stage Theatre served as a Broadway launching pad for the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Next to Normal.” It has produced dramas by numerous award-winning playwrights.
