The hills will be alive with the sound of Tony winners, when NBC’s new production of “The Sound of Music” is broadcast Dec. 5.

NBC announced Monday that stage veterans Audra McDonald, Laura Benanti and Christian Borle have joined the cast, alongside the previously announced Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer as Maria and Capt. Georg Von Trapp.

Five-time Tony winner McDonald (“The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess,” “A Raisin in the Sun”) will play Mother Abbess.

Benanti, who won a Tony for her turn as Louise in the 2008 revival of “Gypsy” starring Patti Lupone, will portray Elsa Schrader, the fiancée of Von Trapp. Borle (a Tony winner for “Peter and the Starcatcher,” NBC’s “Smash”) will take on the role of Max Dettweiler, their friend.

The three-hour presentation is based on the 1959 Broadway production by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which won a Tony for best musical.

The 1965 film version starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer won five Oscars, including best picture.
