Is Broadway ready to see Neil Patrick Harris’ angry inch?

Coming off a successful stint hosting the Tony Awards last week, Harris will be heading back to Broadway next year in a production of the musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch.” Producers announced on Monday that Harris will star in the first Broadway staging of the popular John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask musical about an angsty, transgender rock musician.

“Hedwig” is expected to open on Broadway in spring 2014, but no opening date or theater has been announced. The musical was first performed in 1997 and had a long off-Broadway run at the Jane Street Theater in New York starting in 1998, with a long list of performers appearing as Hedwig.

The musical was turned into a movie in 2001, with Cameron Mitchell directing and starring in the title role.

Harris, who recently turned 40, last appeared on Broadway in a 2004 revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Assassins.” The actor said in a statement that: “I am simultaneously ecstatic and terrified to be stepping into Hedwig’s heels. It is truly a once-in-a-lifetime role and I can’t wait to begin the journey.”
