Some of Broadway’s best performers heading to Southern California

Share

Call it luck or coincidence -- some of Broadway’s top performers happen to be hitting Los Angeles and Orange County stages in the coming weeks. That’s four performers with 10 Tony Awards among them and more nominations than we can count. It’s enough to make a theater lover take out a second mortgage.

This week Mandy Patinkin brings his show “Dress Casual,” with Paul Ford on piano, to Cerritos. Known best these days as savvy Saul Berenson in the Showtime series “Homeland,” Patinkin is a Tony winner who tells stories with words and song in his concert show. The program includes music by Irving Berlin, Stephen Sondheim, Cole Porter and Harry Chapin. 8 p.m. Friday, Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts.

Bernadette Peters is bringing her solo show to both Costa Mesa and Northridge. Peters is a favorite of Stephen Sondheim; her Broadway credits include “Sunday in the Park with George,” “Into the Woods,” “Follies” and “A Little Night Music.” 8 p.m. Oct. 11, Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall; 8 p.m. Oct 19, Valley Performing Arts Center.

Patti Lupone, a sometimes partner on stage of Patinkin’s, will be in Santa Monica next month with sassy pianist and Broadway maven Seth Rudetsky in tow. Their two performances launch a new Broadway series for the Broad Stage. Expect playful give-and-take between Rudetsky and Lupone, plus her powerhouse vocals. 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 19, Broad Stage.

Actress and singer Audra McDonald has two concerts in California, first in San Diego, then a big one with a small ensemble for Los Angeles Opera. McDonald is coming off her acclaimed performance in “Porgy and Bess” and with “The Sound of Music” on the horizon. This is her return to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion -- she appeared in L.A. Opera’s 2007 production of “Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.” 8 p.m. Oct 25, Balboa Theatre; 7:30 p.m. Oct 26, Music Center.

It doesn’t end there. Winter brings two more to the Valley Performing Arts Center: Brian Stokes Mitchell on Dec. 7 and Chita Rivera on Jan. 25. And Lupone returns in March for one night in Costa Mesa.

Pick one, pick all, have fun.
