The awards are scheduled to be handed out Oct. 15 at a benefit ceremony in New York. Allen's support of the arts is made through the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, which issues grants to groups in the Pacific Northwest.
This year's ceremony is being chaired by Maria Bell, the writer and arts patron whose husband is William Bell Jr. Bell serves as a board co-chair of the Museum of Contemporary Art in L.A. (The museum board of trustees recently experienced an exodus of members following the abrupt departure of top curator Paul Schimmel.)
The title of Allen's award is the Eli & Edythe Broad Award for Philanthropy in the Arts. Allen's foundation also makes grants in the fields of science, technology, education and more.
The annual awards ceremony is organized by Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit group that supports that arts and arts education.
