Piano Spheres opener to feature Oscar winners’ world-premiere pieces

Together they’ve won eight Academy Awards and received 76 nominations -- an unusually high level of Hollywood prestige for a low-key piano recital.

The film composers represented on Tuesday’s season-opening performance of Piano Spheres at Zipper Hall in downtown Los Angeles will feature new and recent work for the piano written by some of the most in-demand composers in the movie business.

The program includes world-premiere pieces by John Williams, Randy Newman and Michael Giacchino -- all of whom have won Oscars. In addition, the evening will include the U.S. premiere of a piece by Alexandre Desplat, a five-time Oscar nominee, as well as pieces by Don Davis (“The Matrix”) and Bruce Broughton.

Tuesday’s program will be performed by pianist Gloria Cheng, who has worked with some of the composers on various movie projects. She played piano for Williams’ soundtracks including “The Adventures of Tintin” and “Munich.” Her playing can also be heard on Davis’ music for “The Matrix.”

Piano Spheres is marking its 20th anniversary with the recital, which will also include a performance of Olivier Messiaen’s “Preludes.”

The concert is scheduled for 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Colburn School’s Zipper Hall.
