Sting pens new album ‘The Last Ship’; Broadway musical to follow

Sting returns to his roots for “The Last Ship,” a new musical based on the singer-songwriter’s childhood, with an eye toward Broadway.

The show, set in a struggling English shipyard in the 1980s, also has spawned an album of the same name -- his first in a decade -- to be to be released Sept. 24.

Producers hope to bring “The Last Ship” to Broadway next year.

The Grammy winner spent three years penning the score, collaborating with Brian Yorkey (“Next to Normal”) and John Logan (“Skyfall”). Joe Mantello, director of “Wicked,” will helm the production.

The New York Times reports that the songs vary from the jazzy “And Yet,” performed by a lovelorn sailor returning home, to the folk-inspired title tune laced with Christian imagery and a Northern English dialect.

The coming album features tracks from the musical, as well as songs Sting decided to not to include in the score.

Sting, 61, was born Gordon Sumner in 1951 and raised in Wallsend, England, when the community’s shipbuilding industry was waning.
