Tim Burton exhibition traveling to South Korea

The popular Tim Burton exhibition that originated in 2009 at New York’s Museum of Modern Art and has since toured internationally, including a stop last year at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, is next heading to South Korea.

“Tim Burton” is scheduled to open at the Seoul Museum of Art on Dec. 12 and will run through April 14. It marks the first time the exhibition has traveled to Asia. Its previous stops were in Paris, Toronto and Melbourne, Australia.

MoMA had stated in the past that Paris would be the last city for the exhibition. Burton recently confirmed to a Times reporter that the show would indeed open in South Korea this month.

The exhibition features several hundred objects created by Burton and his collaborators. It includes drawings that the filmmaker made as a youngster growing up in Burbank and later as a student at the California Institute of the Arts. It also features sets, costumes and other material from his feature films.

The Seoul Museum of Art is a relatively young institution, having opened in 1988. When the Burton exhibition ran at LACMA, it included screenings of all the filmmaker’s movies. It remains unclear if the version of the show running in Seoul will also offer screenings.

Burton released two movies this year, “Dark Shadows” and the animated “Frankenweenie.” The latter earned the director his best reviews in years.
