Trey McIntyre Project to shift from dance company to multimedia model

The critically acclaimed Trey McIntyre Project will cease being a full-time dance company later this year and will transition to a multimedia company that will pursue projects in areas including film, photography and writing, company leaders announced this week.

Following the end of its current season in June, the company will make the shift to a more diversified palette that will still include some dance projects. The Idaho-based company began as a part-time summer touring company in 2005 and transitioned to a full-time company in 2009.

McIntyre -- an internationally renowned choreographer -- will continue to work on dance commissions, including a third major commission from the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa to create a site-specific outdoor work that incorporates dance.

The company has appeared a number of times at the Segerstrom, including a performance in 2012.

McIntyre has often been noted for his innovative approach to running a dance company, incorporating multimedia aspects into his productions. In the company’s announcement this week, he touted his new mission as a “brand new model in the national dance landscape. ... We are all proud to have worked so hard to do what we have done.”

Among the company’s forthcoming projects is a film project titled “Ma Maison” and a full-length documentary on the company’s first 10 years.
