Stephen Moyer will once again tap into his musical-theater roots. The “True Blood” star has been cast as Capt. Georg Von Trapp in NBC’s live holiday production of “The Sound of Music,” alongside the previously announced Carrie Underwood as Maria.

The three-hour production, set for Dec. 5, is based on the original 1959 Broadway production by Rodgers and Hammerstein, which won a Tony for best musical.

The 1965 film version, starring Julie Andrews as Maria and Christopher Plummer as the head of the Von Trapp family, won five Oscars, including best picture.

Moyer, best known for playing a Louisiana vampire in HBO’s hit “True Blood,” has a sizable theater resume.

Moyer recently told The Times he’d performed in about 60 musicals by age 18. In July, the actor returned to the stage for the first time in almost two decades to star as the slick suit Billy Flynn in the Hollywood Bowl production of “Chicago: The Musical.”

In his review of the Bowl’s “Chicago,” Times theater critic Charles McNulty said that Moyer “has dashing good looks and an impressive voice, but he didn’t quite have the manic charisma one expects from Billy Flynn, the showboating shyster.... His performance was blandly appealing rather than crookedly enticing.”
