‘War Horse’ to end Broadway run in January

“War Horse” on Broadway will ride off into the sunset in January. Producers of the Tony Award-winning drama have set a Jan. 6 closing date for the play at the Vivian Beaumont Theatre. By the time it closes, the play will have run for close to 21 months.

An import from Britain’s National Theatre, “War Horse” has been an international success. The show, based on the book by Michael Morpurgo, is running on London’s West End and has spawned a U.S. national tour, which recently came to the Ahmanson Theatre in L.A.

The tour is scheduled to come to the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa in January.

Using life-size puppets to represent its equine characters, “War Horse” tells the story of a remarkable steed and its adventures during World War I. A movie version of Morpurgo’s novel, directed by Steven Spielberg, opened last year.

“War Horse” on Broadway won five Tony Awards in 2011, including the prize for new play. The Handspring Puppet Co. created the four-legged creatures seen on stage.
