Thom Mayne to design new Cornell University building in New York
Architect Thom Mayne has been chosen to design a new Cornell University building that is to rise on Roosevelt Island in New York. Mayne, head of the Los Angeles architecture firm Morphosis, won a competition to design the first building for the CornellNYC Tech campus.
The proposed building is to be approximately 150,000 square feet in size and will feature classrooms, lab space and offices for Cornell’s high-tech graduate school campus. The $150-million building is scheduled to be completed by the start of the 2017 academic year.
CornellNYC Tech will be offering an engineering and applied-sciences curriculum. The campus, which is a partnership with the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, is expected to cost more than $2 billion and feature about 10 structures.
Morphosis has extensive experience with academic buildings. The firm recently designed the Cahill Center at Caltech in Pasadena as well as a new building for Cooper Union in New York that was completed in 2009.
The firm’s other notable structures include the Caltrans building in downtown L.A. and the San Francisco Federal Building. Mayne won the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest honor, in 2005.
