T.I. didn't show up, M.I.A. disappointed and Matt & Kim weren't happy with their show. But Virgin Mobile FreeFest was still a blowout success. LCD Soundsystem's unbelievable closing set would have made up for three disappointing M.I.A. shows. And Pavement didn't just deliver for their obsessive fans, but got a rise out of the crowd. The rest of the line-up covered the spectrum of current music: indie, rock, electronic -- even brass, courtesy of Trombone Shorty. There was Ludacris, Joan Jett, Jimmy Eat World. For our money, the best time was had at the dance forest, where Neon Indian, Sleigh Bells and Chromeo performed so furiously they made tent look more like a dust bowl. Oh, and did we mention it was free?
