'Dancing with the Stars' recap: Week 5 Results

Tonight will be our first night with the "Dance Duel" and we get to business pretty quickly with an encore performance of Maria and Derek's lively salsa. Derek takes off his shirt again, but this time he leaves Maria hanging for the kiss, with the music stopped, and goes over and smooches Carrie Ann. Maria, almost as an afterthought, flutters around Bruno. As Maria comes up out of their end pose, she realizes that half her left breast is hanging out of her top.  She doesn't freak out at all; just calmly tucks it back up in. Attagirl.

Footage from last night: Gladys and Tristan seem to be having so much fun together; both of them are grinning from ear to ear. Melissa had fun dancing that routine, even if the judges' comments weren't great. Len and Bruno start singing "Maria" from "West Side Story" as they wait for Maria and Derek to show up. It's kinda cute. Maria admits that if a judge wants in the bedroom, you say yes. I can't believe how much I've warmed up to her since the first of the season.

Results: Maria & Derek: Safe. Melissa & Maks: Safe. (And one of them says something that got the audio muted. Tsk, tsk.) Gladys & Tristan: Safe.

I'm shocked Melissa & Maks aren't in the bottom two.  I'm still betting Gavin & Karina are going to be there, but who's going to be the other couple?

Train plays a song. It has music and singing. Louis and Cheryl dance - that's good.

Macy's Stars of Dance, featuring Sheila E. This is fantastic — love her, and love the capoeira moves these guys are doing at the beginning. Less excited by the ladies in bikinis with ridiculous headdresses, but I'm not the target audience for that part. Now it's couples, doing what looks like "street" salsa.  I love how Sheila E plays the drums standing up — what a woman!

Commercials, and then Selena Gomez sings, while four of the dance troupe dance in front of her. This performance doesn't sound entirely live and they're really not showing a whole lot of close-ups of Selena while she's singing. Sketchy.

Footage from last night: Donald & Peta are disappointed in Len's 8, but not mad. Well, Peta's kinda ticked. They show Carrie Ann's reaction when Katherine & Mark finish their routine and she seems legitimately wowed. William's pleased enough with his dance that he "doesn't give a [expletive] about [his] foot."

Results: William & Cheryl: Safe. Katherine & Mark: Safe. Donald & Peta: Safe.

More footage from last night: Jaleel & Kym starts undressing Jaleel in the post-dance interview. Roshon signs interviews for fans backstage. I can hear my mom saying, "What a nice young man." Karina admits to farting while their clip package is airing. I'm not sure I wanted to know that.

Results: Roshon & Chelsie are safe, which means Gavin & Karina and Jaleel & Kym will be doing the "Dance Duel."

Gavin pretty much admits to Tom that he and Karina don't have their cha cha ready at all.  Which tells me Gavin really wants to go home.  He had to know he was going to be in the bottom two.

The couples will dance side by side. The judges are supposed to judge only on the dancing they're about to see right now, not previous performances. And they're dancing to Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory" (which the singer is kind of whiffing).  They were showing the first part of the dance in split-screen and it's almost too much for my brain to handle. They switch back to a wide shot just long enough for my brain to clear and then they bring it back. Carrie Ann says quickly to Gavin that he "worked those knees" and tells Jaleel he had a very "strong cha cha flavor with definition to his movement" and then adds to Gavin that he was very good in hold. Len says his admiration "knows no bounds" because neither Gavin nor Jaleel has done a cha cha yet this season. He adds that Gavin gave it 100% and that Jaleel had "great rhythm and great movement."  Bruno says that Gavin's timing improved when he was up on his knees.  Bruno says that Jaleel had good timing and great hip action. This has got to go to Jaleel, right?

Carrie Ann: Jaleel & Kym.  Len:  Jaleel & Kym.  Bruno: Jaleel & Kym.

So we say goodbye to Gavin and Karina.  See you next week for Motown week — possibly the only week in which I won't have to rely on the Internet to identify a song for me. (But I may have to call my dad.) Holy smokes — apparently they're getting The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, and Martha Reeves to sing live for the dances. I'm so there.

Apparently, the ballroom was "shellshocked" by last week's bottom two. The ballroom needs to toughen up. Tonight is Latin night. I hope that doesn't mean every other dance is a rumba — booooorrrrring.  We start with Carlos Santana performing "Evil Ways," though they don't identify...

Rock Night was last night, and the leaderboard was shook up. We know Melissa was taken from the hospital and my source for all Hollywood gossip, my dad, reported to me earlier today that he'd heard "concussion." The clip package from last night shows Melissa wacking her head on Maks's leg...
