Here’s the lineup for the Aug. 25 San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books
Crime novelist T. Jefferson Parker discusses his new novel
The line-up of authors has been announced for the second annual San Diego Union-Tribune Festival of Books, scheduled for Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Liberty Station in Point Loma.
Included will be 30 panels on a variety of topics — contemporary fiction, crime and mysteries, military history, science-fiction, romance, “fake news,” memoirs, the process of writing — as well as a children’s reading stage, “Author Alley,” and exhibitor booths.
The festival, which is sponsored by the Union-Tribune in partnership with KPBS, drew an estimated 10,000 people last year. Among the featured speakers this time:
• Brit Bennett, whose debut novel, “The Mothers,” was a New York Times bestseller. She’ll be in conversation with authors T. Greenwood (“Rust & Stardust”) and Michelle Gable (“The Summer I Met Jack”).
• T. Jefferson Parker, the critically-acclaimed Fallbrook crime novelist whose new book, “Swift Vengeance,” is set largely in San Diego County. He will be on a panel with Matt Coyle (“Blood Truth”) and Jack Carr (“The Terminal List”).
• Children’s book authors Kadir Nelson (“We Are the Ship,” “If You Plant a Seed”) and Janell Cannon (“Stellaluna,” marking its 25th anniversary this year).
• Jean Guerrero (“Crux”) and Kimball Taylor (“The Coyote’s Bicycle”), in conversation about border stories.
• Lynn Vincent and Sarah Vladic, discussing their book “Indianapolis: The True Story of the Worst Sea Disaster in U.S. Naval History,” currently No. 5 on the New York Times’ non-fiction best seller list.
Also on the program is the announcement of this year’s “One Book, One San Diego” selection. Attendees will be able to visit “Author Alley,” where dozens of local writers will be selling their books, and see more than 60 exhibitors offering books and a variety of other products and services.
For children, there will be a reading stage and a separate pavilion filled with activities.
And there will be a panel called “Fake News, Real Problem,” featuring Lora Cicalo and Matthew Hall of the Union-Tribune and Brooke Binkowski, formerly with Snopes, the fact-checking website.
The “Fake News” panel is free, but the others are ticketed at $3 each, with some of the proceeds going to the San Diego Council on Literacy. Tickets and more information are available at sdfestivalofbooks.com.
