If the Backstreet Boys and new Kids on the Block concert has you wanting to relive the '80s and '90s, there's plenty of options available, including several dance parties, nostalgia acts and even laser tag.
The Ottobar's upstairs floor has long been a shrine to the kind of unadulterated pop that flourished then.
On Saturday, DJs Sarrs and Starlight host a no cover "All Excess" night that will feature a selection of the best of INXS, Depeche Mode, The Cure and other new wave classics.
And on June 3, the bar will celebrate its annual "Pretty in Pink' prom party, now — unbelievably — in its seventh year. It must be true — the '80s never die. Organizers will spin '80s classics and play the usual music videos — Madonna, Michael, Prince. Time-appropriate clothing is encouraged. Also, the monthly Madonna-Lady Gaga-Prince party will return to The Ottobar's downstairs Friday July 8.
The All Excess party is Saturday 9 p.m.-2 a.m. upstairs at The Ottobar. The Pretty in Pink prom is June 3. Tickets are $10. The Madonna-Gaga-Britney party is July 8. Both events are free. The club is at 2549 N. Howard St. Call 410-662-0069 or go to theottobar.com.
The Ottobar is not the only club that's hosting nostalgia parties. On June 16, Bourbon Street has a "Tainted Love" party, named for the classic Soft Cell song. The $20 cover includes all-you-can drink domestic beer. Bourbon Street is at 316 Guilford Ave. Call 410-528-8377 or go to bourbonstreetbaltimore.com.
Some of the most well-known bands of the decades are themselves on tour, or out with commemorative material. The Pet Shop Boys, popular for "West End Girls," among others, have just released a double live album, "Concrete," and a ballet score, "The Most Incredible Thing." In April, it was announced they would open on the new European tour of another '90s boy band, Robbie Williams. And the reigning queen of '90s pop, Britney Spears, has just started a worldwide tour that will stop at the Verizon Center July 21.
Even as some of the biggest teen stars of the '80s have survived, so has at least one middle school obsession: laser tag. At 7835 Eastpoint Mall Dr., Ultrazone has $13 multi-play specials on Fridays and Saturdays. And at Laser Sport, (with locations in Reisterstown, 12400 Owings Mills Blvd., and Laurel, at 4705 Baltimore Ave.) a group of 18-15 players gets a 45-minute play session for $14. For more information on Laser Sport, call 410- 833-6611 or visit xplasersportowingsmills.com. For more information Ultrazone, call 410-288-0881 or visit lasernationlasertag.com.
If you what you want is a mash-up of it all, the Legwarmers, the Washington-based '80s cover band, will perform at Rams Head Live June 18. The club is at 20 Market Place in Power Plant Live. Doors at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15. Call 410-244-1131 or go to ramsheadlive.com.Copyright © 2014, Los Angeles Times
