'All in Love Is Fair' ★★★

Jackie Taylor's latest jukebox musical for Black Ensemble Theater focuses on a town called Love, Ill. We're introduced to who's who in Love &#8212 from the 50-years-and-counting couple of Zeland (Zachary Boyd) and Rena (Rhonda Preston) to the three-months-married-and-on-the-verge-of-homicide pair of Diedra (Dawn Bless Comer) and Cortez (Daryl Brooks). The songs of Luther Vandross are front-and-center. A man mourning his dad's death delivers a heart-tugging rendition of Vandross' biggest hit, "Dance With My Father." Shameless tear-jerker? Sure. But who listens to R&B for emotional subtlety? You want irony? Not your show. You want to hear somebody tear the guts out of "Don't Want to Be a Fool" or "Wait for Love"? Right this way to the Goods Delivery Department.
- KERRY REID
Through May 16 at Black Ensemble Theater, 4520 N. Beacon St.; $45-$47.50 at 773-769-4451 or blackensembletheater.org
