Latin for "Light After Darkness," the director's brain-bending follow-up to the rhapsodic "Silent Light" sounds sane enough relayed, simply, as the story of a family of four living in rural Mexico. But both visually and narratively Reygadas is after a sensation of constantly shifting reality. The devil himself makes an appearance; certain, fairly explicit scenes take place in a swingers sex club, or cult, or something; the father, coping poorly with his anger management challenges, at one point beats a dog to death (just off-camera, but it's not easy viewing). Dogs have had a rough Cannes this year. Even the relatively benign Wes Anderson fable "Moonrise Kingdom" kills off a dog. In Spanish.
