Comic-Con 2018: You don’t need a badge for these fun events

Whether you’ve got a one-day ticket to Comic-Con or no ticket at all, there’s still plenty to see and do in downtown San Diego outside of the convention center throughout the week and weekend.

Some events are right behind or beside the San Diego Convention Center while others can be found in downtown’s Gaslamp Quarter and beyond.

Here are some of the coolest events and activities you can do outside without a Comic-Con badge.

‘Impractical Jokers’: Block Party

Sal, Joe, Murr and Q from truTV’s “Impractical Jokers” will bring their annual block party back to Comic-Con. It includes a zipline, a 3D photo experience, face painting and a White Castle food truck. Fans will also get to see some of the show’s dares and punishments up close like the “tire baby” obstacle course and a “virtual reality high wire walk.”

The stars of the show will be on hand from 4:30 to 6 p.m. each day and at 8 p.m. there will be a showing of the mid-season premiere episode of “Impractical Jokers.”

1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Park at Petco Park at 840 K St. Free.

Amazon Fire TV’s ‘Fast Forward to the Future’

This activation includes an immersive journey starting at a graveyard of antiquated technologies that leads up to a chance try out the new Fire TV Cube, a voice-activated 4K Ultra HD streaming media player controlled by Amazon’s “Alexa.” It will also have lounges inspired by “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones” and NBC’s “The Good Place.”

Yes, HBO’s famous iron throne will be there.

9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Market Street. Free.

Nerdist House

The wide variety of activities at Nerdist House is too long to list, but more information is available here. Just to name a few, there will be live Nerdist shows, in-depth interviews and conversations, meet and greets and a virtual reality experience.

Thursday through Sunday at Sparks Gallery at 530 Sixth Ave. Free.

‘Mr. Mercedes’ Immersive Experience

The AT&T AUDIENCE Network is bringing a fan experience based on its original series “Mr. Mercedes” to Comic- Con. The show is based on the trilogy by Stephen King.

Fans can play a virtual reality escape room game, play an augmented reality adventure game and see recreations of sets using props from the show.

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday at 643 G St. Free. Fans may pre-register for the immersive experience at att.com/MrMercedesSDCC for a chance to get a fast pass.

‘Purge City’

In celebration of “The First Purge” film and upcoming television series, “The Purge,” USA Network is bringing “Purge City” to the Gaslamp District. It’s a “tongue-in-cheek, one-stop shop for the perfect purge night” with items like emergency candles and energy drinks to “help citizens stay safe and awake for the 12 hours of annual lawlessness.”

Purge City will also pay tribute to previous purge nights and highlight political rise of the “New Founding Fathers of America.”

11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. 215 Tony Gwynn Drive. Free.

‘Peanuts’ Global Artist Collective

The beloved “Peanuts” comic strip is being re-imagined by seven artists who will share their work during Comic-Con. The “Peanuts Global Artist Collective” is made up of artists Andre Saraiva x Mr. A, Nina Chanel Abney, AVAF, FriendsWithYou, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Rob Pruitt and Kenny Scharf.

This pop-up shop will feature “surreal Snoopys, psychedelic Charlie Browns and witty Woodstocks.”

10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Sunday at 226 Fifth Ave. Free.

LAIKA Live

The animation studio behind “Coraline,” “ParaNorman,” and “The Boxtrolls” will offer a live exhibit starting during Pride weekend in San Diego. It will display props, puppets, sets from LAIKA films and technology demonstrations and costume characters will pose for photos with fans.

Opens Friday, July 13 from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Times vary in the following days and are listed on laika.com. 350 Fifth Ave. Free.

Adult Swim Camp

Adult Swim is bringing summer camp to Comic-Con with canoe races, archery contests, chainsaw-wielding wood carvers and, of course, hot dogs. When the sun goes down, fans can stop by the camp to watch the latest episodes of Adult Swim shows and eat s’mores.

4 p.m. to late Thursday through Sunday. Behind the Convention Center at the Fifth Avenue Landing and Convention Way. Must be 18 or older to enter. Free.

‘Project Blue Book’ Headquarters

HISTORY has an upcoming series “Project Blue Book” about the U.S. Air Force’s investigations into the presence of UFOs and related phenomena. At the headquarters for “Project Blue Book” during Comic-Con, these UFO cases will be brought to life through immersive experiences.

10 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday. Petco Park parking lot. Free.

Taco Bell’s ‘Demolition Man’ Experience

6 p.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday. 658 Fifth Ave. Costs unknown.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Experience

Prime Video’s upcoming series “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” will offer a sneak peak at what the shows all about outside the convention center. The massive exhibition will showcase a blend of virtual reality and the physical world with a chance to repel from a helicopter, zip lines and car chases, an escape experience that recreates the show’s pilot episode, and the Bazaar, filled with missions to be completed at every turn.

9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday at the corner of First Street and Martin Luther King Promenade. Free.
