For the young reader who knows the territory of fantasy — whether it's Hans Christian Andersen or the Grimms — journeying along with fifth-grader Hazel is resonant. It's a tough year for Hazel after her parents' divorce, and her longtime friend, Jack, doesn't seem the same. When she enters a particular dark woods to investigate Jack's disappearance, Hazel's up against something no story has quite prepared her for, a world where neither wolves nor woodmen are what she might have expected. The conclusion is not simple, but readers will be happy to have traveled with her.
