'Kokoda Front Line!'

Damien Parer and Ken Hall became the first Australians to win an Academy Award for “Kokoda Front Line!,” their 1942 documentary about the Australian troops fighting the Japanese in the jungles of New Guinea. The documentary famously contains no battle shots but much footage of injured troops hauled on stretchers over rivers and up steep inclines, as well as a famous sequence featuring the men of the retreating 39th Battalion, viewed from the waist down trudging through the mud. Parer, who was born in the suburb Malvern, near Melbourne, remains one of Australia's most famous combat photographers. Australian War Memorial Negative Number 013287
