Lionsgate's "Hunger Games" sequel has shot through another box office milestone, passing $400 million in ticket sales in the U.S. and Canada, according to the distributor.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," the second film in the series based on the books by Suzanne Collins, grossed $1.7 million Thursday to cross the $400 million mark in 42 days.

That makes it the fifth fastest movie to hit that level of revenue, not adjusted for inflation, after "Avatar," "The Dark Knight," "The Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises."

"The Avengers" reached $400 million in just 14 days. "Catching Fire's" predecesor, 2012's "The Hunger Games," got there in 80 days.

"Catching Fire" has grossed $408 million overseas to bring its worldwide tally to $808 million, easily topping the first "Hunger Games," which generated $691 million globally over its lifespan.

The sequel is the second highest grossing movie of 2013 domestically, coming in behind "Iron Man 3's" $409 million.

The final two installments, "Mockingjay - Part 1" and "Mockingjay - Part 2," are set for release in November 2014 and November 2015, respectively.
