Tribune splitting up! Murdoch to appear before Parliament again.

The Skinny: Apologies for running a little late this morning. Wednesday’s headlines include Tribune Co. splitting off its newspaper unit into a separate company, Rupert Murdoch agreeing to appear before Parliament agan and Meredith Vieira getting a new daytime talk show.

Daily Dose: While Fox Sports is busy promoting the launch of Fox Sports 1, its new national cable channel that debuts in August, it is still staying quiet on Fox Sport 2, the sister channel it has in the works. But some cable subscribers are already getting notices saying that next month the Fox-owned channel Fuel will become Fox Sports 2. Not to toot my own horn but this confirms a story I wrote last May.

Breaking up. Tribune Co., parent of the Los Angeles Times, said Wednesday it was spinning off its newspapers into a separate company called Tribune Publishing Co. The TV assets, which are seen as having a brighter future, would remain with Tribune Co. The move is similar to what Rupert Murdoch did with News Corp. Early coverage from the Los Angeles Times.

Second-most-humble day. Media mogul Rupert Murdoch has agreed to appear before British Parliament to discuss remarks he recently made about the investigation into his newspaper company News Corp. over bribes paid to law enforcement authorities in return for stories. Murdoch was recorded this year telling staff at one of his newspapers that the company was being picked on and implying that such payments were standard operating procedure for tabloids. In other words, the lawmakers were shocked to find gambling going on. More on Murdoch’s latest headache from The Guardian and Los Angeles Times.

New gig. Former “Today” co-anchor Meredith Vieira will try her hand at a daytime talk show to be distributed by NBCUniversal. The show will debut in the fall of 2014. NBCUniversal has yet to say which stations are signed on to carry the program. The show could end up in time slots currently held by Katie Couric, another former “Today” anchor, if her show goes away next year. Details from the New York Times and TV Guide.

A new view. Elisabeth Hasselbeck is exiting ABC’s morning chat show “The View” to join “Fox & Friends” on the Fox News Channel. Hasselbeck will replace Gretchen Carlson, who is getting her own daytime show on the cable news network. Carlson was able to get her own piece of land because Fox News is moving Megyn Kelly from daytime to prime time. Remember when Barbara Walters denied that Hasselbeck was leaving “The View” earlier this year? TV Newser with the story.

Is there a drive-in under the dome? Most movie studios run the majority of their TV ads late in the week (in advance of the weekend) and many steer clear of CBS, which attracts a lot of older viewers that Hollywood doesn’t always target. But the network’s new summer series “Under the Dome” on Monday night is attracting a lot of attention from Hollywood, says Variety.
