Two new dramas move into a ‘Breaking Bad’ studio in New Mexico

In a coup for New Mexico’s film and TV recruitment efforts, two new network television dramas are moving into the Albuquerque studio where the long-running TV series “Breaking Bad” filmed.

ABQ Studios said an NBC drama called “The Night Shift” and a new ABC series called “Killer Women” will be produced at its massive soundstage facility.

The news is a further blow to Los Angeles, which has seen a sharp fall-off in new television dramas in recent years as producers take their business to other locations in order to capitalize on tax breaks and rebates.

“The Night Shift,” produced by Sony Television for NBC, is about a group of Army doctors who return home to work the night shift in a San Antonio hospital. “Killer Women” centers around a female Texas Ranger and is based on the Argentine series “Mujeres Asesinas.” The pilot for the series was filmed in Texas.

The facility was previously home to the the six-year run of multiple Emmy Award-winning series “Breaking Bad,” which was in residence since the studio first opened in 2007. Many of the stellar crew from the AMC series, now airing its final episodes, are already working on the new shows.

“There are a lot of familiar faces on the lot today,” says Wayne Rauschenberger, chief operating officer of ABQ Studios. “It’s great to see the local crew moving from one show to the next. After working on ‘Breaking Bad’ for so long, they have honed their skills and are very much in demand whenever a new production comes to town.”

New Mexico offers a 30% direct cash rebate to qualified television series under the so-called Breaking Bad Law enacted by the New Mexico legislature earlier this year and signed by Gov. Susana Martinez in April.
