TV ratings: ‘American Crime’ down in second week; CBS wins the night

CBS and Thursday are anything but an odd couple.

On the first Thursday of daylight saving time, which saw TV usage among adults 18 to 49 drop 7% from the previous week, CBS took the night in total viewers and the advertiser-coveted 18 to 49 demographic.

“The Big Bang Theory” was again the night’s overall big bang, with 16.08 million viewers and a 4.4 in the demographic. Meanwhile, freshman entrant “The Odd Couple” continues to hold its own in its 8:30 p.m. slot--this week it nabbed 10.74 million total viewers and a 2.6 in the demographic.

“Mom,” meanwhile, brought in 9.18 million viewers and was up 5% in the demographic with a 2.3 rating. “Elementary” closed out the night with 7.7 million viewers and a 1.5 rating in the demographic.

Ratings for the eye network are subject to change in the nationals due to preemptions or delays for college basketball in markets including Greensboro, Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.

Despite some of its dramas notching lows among adults 18 to 49, ABC still managed to place second for the night in the demographic. “Grey’s Anatomy” took in a series low of a 2.1 in the demographic--its previous season low was Feb. 26 with a 2.2; “Scandal” saw a season low with a 2.6 in the demographic, down from last week’s 3.0 in the demographic.

Midseason entrant “American Crime,” with 5.8 million viewers and a 1.4 in the demographic, more than doubled the time-period premiere of NBC’s “The Slap” in adults 18 to 49, but finished behind “Elementary.” It fell 30% in the demographic in its second week, earning a 1.4 over last week’s 2.0. The show did win the hour across all key women’s demographics (18-34, 18-49, 25-54).

All that kept Fox from hitting any high notes with its two-hour block of “American Idol.” The veteran singing competition show was down half a ratings point from last week’s installment with a 1.7 in the demographic--a season low -- and 8.1 million viewers overall.

On NBC, “Dateline: The Real Blacklist” nabbed a 0.8 in the demographic, matching last week’s performance of “The Slap” in the time slot. And “The Blacklist” was on par with last week with a 1.8 in the demographic. While “The Slap” proved less fulfilling than since-yanked “Allegiance” in the slot, with a 0.6 in the demographic and 2.9 million viewers. (Last week’s episode of “Allegiance,” its last as NBC pulled it from its schedule, brought in a 0.8 rating and 3.3 million viewers.)

The denizens of the CW rounded out the night. “The Vampire Diaries” was down from last week, with a 0.6 in the demographic and 1.4 million viewers overall. And “Reign” returned flat with a 0.4 in the demographic and 1 million viewers.
