TV ratings: ‘Big Brother’ flat, ‘The Winner Is...’ finale surges

The “Big Brother” house is getting considerably less crowded, but ratings are holding steady for the CBS reality series that sent two houseguests packing Thursday night.

“Big Brother,” embroiled in controversy after a contestant made racist and homophobic remarks about her housemates and another made jokes about child porn, drew 7.08 million viewers and a rating of 2.5 in the key adult 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary numbers from Nielsen.

The show was the most watched and highest rated broadcast of the night. CBS, still in a carriage dispute with Time Warner Cable, won Thursday with an average 6.63 million people tuning in and an 18-49 rating of 1.9. A ratings point equals roughly 1.3 million viewers.

Representatives of the networks noted that the early Nielsen numbers could change more than usual because of local pre-season NFL broadcasts that affected prime time in 15% of the country. That means the ratings are likely inflated and will be adjusted downward in official numbers.

“The Winner Is...,” the singing contest on NBC hosted by Nick Lachey, got a big boost in its finale, jumping 40% from last week to a 1.4 rating. “Hollywood Game Night,” also on NBC, got 4.7 million viewers overall and a rating of 1.5, up 25% from the prior week.

On ABC, “Motive” and “Rookie Blue” surged, while the slapstick-heavy reality show “Wipeout” fell 8%.
