TV ratings: ‘Voice’-powered NBC edges CBS; ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ down

A “Voice”-driven NBC had a slight edge over drama-powered CBS among key 18-to-49-year-old viewers Tuesday night, according to early numbers from Nielsen.

“The Voice” was the highest-rated show of the night in the advertiser-desired demographic, earning a 2.8 where a ratings point equals about 1.3-million viewers, though it was the singing contest’s lowest number yet this season.

The network’s new comedies “About a Boy” and “Growing Up Fisher” were both down a bit week-to-week to a 1.8 and a 1.5, respectively, while “Chicago Fire” continued to hold strong at a 1.9.

For the night, NBC scored a 2.1 in 18-to-49, a tenth of a point better than CBS, which had the biggest overall prime-time audience on average (13.2 million).

“NCIS,” Tuesday’s most-watched show (17.2 million viewers), rose 8% to a 2.6 in the demo this time around, followed by a slightly diminished “NCIS: LA” and a “Person of Interest” rerun.

Ratings for “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” dipped from last week as the comic book series’ plot continued to dovetail with the well-received film “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” that grossed $95 million in its debut over the weekend.

The episode averaged 4.9-million viewers overall and a rating of 1.7 in 18-to-49, down 15% from a week ago in the key demographic, though ratings for “S.H.I.E.L.D.” tend to increase by a tenth of a point or more in the final numbers. ABC’s comedies “The Goldbergs” and “Trophy Wife” also posted week-to-week declines.

Fox’s struggling “Glee” rose a tick from last week to a 1.0 in the demo. Back-to-back episodes of “The Mindy Project” rebounded from last week’s soft Tuesday debuts in total viewership but were still low in 18-to-49, with a 1.0 at 9 p.m. and a 1.1 at 9:30 p.m.
