NBC’s ‘Peter Pan Live!’ ratings lower than ‘Sound of Music’ but strong

NBC didn’t exactly soar in the ratings Thursday night with its three-hour live telecast “Peter Pan Live!”

The event program, which starred Allison Williams as the iconic children’s character and Christopher Walken as Captain Hook, scored a 2.3 rating among adults ages 18 to 49 and about 9.1 million total viewers, according to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen.

While the numbers are solid, they are also disappointing. The viewership was about half of what last year’s “The Sound of Music Live” telecast brought in--which clocked in at a 4.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic and nearly 19 million viewers.

The dip wasn’t unanticipated--last year’s production of “Sound of Music” had the allure of novelty and pop star Carrie Underwood in the lead role. Of course, working in its favor was not having to compete with new episodes from ABC’s Shonda Rhimes-backed “TGIT.”

Despite the unspectacular turnout, the “Peter Pan Live” telecast was still more than double NBC’s non-sports averages on Thursday night so far this season. And it delivered the second-highest 18-49 demographic ratings for NBC on a Thursday, excluding sports telecasts, in three years.

And NBC is expected to win the night.

At CBS, numbers are insufficient due to football preemptions in Dallas and Chicago, which slightly inflated results. Early numbers have a repeat of “The Big Bang Theory” garnering a 2.3 rating in the prized demographic and 10.7 million total viewers; “Mom” clocked in a 2.5 rating in the demographic and 10.6 million viewers overall. In the 9 p.m. slot, “Two and a Half Men” wrangled a 2.5 rating in the demographic and 10.4 million viewers overall. “The McCarthys,” in the 9:30 p.m. slot, nabbed a 2.0 rating in the demographic and 8.3 million total viewers.

“Elementary” closed out the night with a 1.8 rating in the demo and 8.6 million total viewers.

On ABC, declines ensued with its “TGIT” block on hiatus. In its place was reality show “The Taste,” which took in a 0.9 rating in the demographic and 3.3 million total viewers--down roughly 30% since its last season premiere in January. An encore of “How to Get Away With Murder” rounded out the night with a 0.6 rating in the demographic and 2.8 million viewers overall.

Meanwhile, Fox saw some minor gains. “Bones” and “Gracepoint” were both up 0.2 from the airings last week. “Bones” garnered a 1.5 rating in the demographic and 6 million total viewers, while “Gracepoint” notched a 0.9 rating and 3.6 million total viewers.

After airing repeats last week, the CW was back with new episodes and saw some gains from originals that aired two weeks ago. “The Vampire Diaries” earned a 0.7 rating in the demographic and 1.5 million viewers and “Reign” clocked a 0.5 rating in the demographic and 1.2 million total viewers.
