BAFTA L.A. Britannia Awards to honor Benedict Cumberbatch

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts Los Angeles will honor Benedict Cumberbatch with the Britannia Award for British artist of the year at the 2013 BAFTA Los Angeles Britannia Awards on Nov. 9 at the Beverly Hilton.

The 37-year-old British actor (“Sherlock”) played Capt. Kirk’s nemesis Khan in the summer hit “Star Trek Into Darkness.” And this fall, he’ll appear in several high-profile films, including “The Fifth Estate,” in which he plays WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange; “12 Years a Slave;” “August: Osage County;” and “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.”

“Benedict Cumberbatch has had a remarkable year, and as one of the UK’s leading talents he truly exemplifies the continued respect that British talents have garnered around the globe,” said Gary Dartnall, BAFTA Los Angeles chairman in a statement Thursday.

The Britannia Award for British artist of the year is given to “a British artist whose outstanding performance in a year have demonstrated the high quality of their craftsmanship.”

Previous winners include Daniel Craig, Kate Winslet and Michael Sheen.

BAFTA Los Angeles previously announced George Clooney will receive the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for excellence in film; Kathryn Bigelow is the recipient of the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for excellence in directing; and Ben Kingsley will receive the Albert R. Broccoli Britannia Award for worldwide contribution to entertainment.
