City of Lights, City of Angels fest announces classic films

Besides showcasing new French cinema, the 18th City of Lights, City of Angels film festival, which takes place April 21-28 at the Directors Guild of America, will feature several classic films and a tribute to New Wave pioneer François Truffaut.

The festival will be honoring Truffaut on the 30th anniversary of the death of the director of such classics as “The 400 Blows,” “Shoot the Piano Player,” “Jules and Jim” and “Day for Night” with a special program. Details will be announced soon.

The festival will also pay homage to filmmaker Patrice Chéreau, who died last year, with a screening of the new digitally restored director’s cut of his acclaimed 1994 film “Queen Margot.”

City of Lights, City of Angels will also premiere restorations of three classic French films: Jean Cocteau’s 1946 “Beauty and the Beast,” with Jean Marais and Josette Day; René Clément’s “Purple Noon” (1960) with Alain Delon and Maurice Ronet; and Otar Iosseliani’s 1984 film “Favourites of the Moon,” with Mathieu Amalric.
