Conversation: Golden Globes 2013
The Golden Globes on Sunday night were full of surprises: Jodie Foster’s speech. Former President Clinton introducing best dramatic picture nominee “Lincoln.” And “Argo” taking not only that prize but also generating a win for director Ben Affleck, who wasn’t even nominated for an Oscar in that category.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., which presents the Globes, also gave three awards to “Les Misérables,” Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the long-running stage musical set in 19th century France. In the comedy or musical categories, “Les Misérables” received best picture and actor for Hugh Jackman as ex-con Jean Valjean, while Anne Hathaway won supporting actress for her performance as Fantine.

On the TV side, Lena Dunham capped her coming-out year with two Golden Globes for her critically acclaimed HBO comedy, “Girls.” The drama award went to Showtime’s counter-terrorism thriller “Homeland,” which won last year too. And another big honoree was HBO’s “Game Change,” which dramatized Sarah Palin’s ascension to the GOP ticket in the 2008 presidential campaign.
Meanwhile, show hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler kept the jokes coming during the telecast, prompting Times television critic Mary McNamara to write: “Lovely, brilliant and utterly fearless, they made awards-show hosting an art form again, helming three hours of occasionally hilarious, occasionally emotional and surprisingly enjoyable TV.”
