Golden Globes nominations preview: Five things to watch

Share

The Hollywood Foreign Press Assn., that wacky band of star-struck international entertainment journalists, will announce the nominees for its Golden Globes awards beginning at 5:15 a.m. Pacific time on Thursday morning.

The nominations will be revealed in two shifts, with the first slate (mostly television) announced at 5:20 a.m., followed by the film-heavy second grouping at 5:38 a.m.

Here are five things to watch for:

1) Whither “Wolf”? Martin Scorsese’s darkly comic “The Wolf of Wall Street” screened very late in the game -- too late to amass enough votes to score at Wednesday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations. The HFPA did see the movie, though, and has a long history of showering its star, Leonardo DiCaprio, with nominations. Look for “Wolf” to win a nod for picture (comedy), as well as recognition for Scorsese, DiCaprio and writer Terence Winter. And if it somehow falls short, its Oscar chances will be seriously damaged.

2) “Mr. Banks” rebound. No movie has played better with academy voters than Disney’s making-of-”Mary Poppins” saga “Saving Mr. Banks,” and yet Emma Thompson received its sole SAG Awards nomination. It should triple that count with the HFPA, taking nods for picture (drama) and stars Thompson and Tom Hanks.

3) “American Hustle” continues to increase its standing. David O. Russell’s entertaining crime comedy has been building awards-season momentum since its best picture win with the New York Film Critics Circle. Look for it -- and “12 Years a Slave” -- to lead the way on the movie side with Globes voters, with nominations for actors Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, along with nods for picture (comedy), writing and direction.

4) A harvest for “Orange.” HFPA voters love to be ahead of the curve with their television nominations, which should be good news for new shows like “Orange Is the New Black” and “Masters of Sex,” as well as “Orphan Black” actress Tatiana Maslany.

5) And a dose of the crazy. And not just nominations for the CBS comedy, “The Crazy Ones,” which will probably happen too. (Robin Williams! Sarah Michelle Gellar! Stars!) The HFPA always delivers some sort of weird, inexplicable nod (last year it was a best picture nomination for the little-seen “Salmon Fishing in the Yemen”) that produces a round of head-scratching. (Did the studio actually fly HFPA members to Yemen and feed them salmon?) This year should be no exception, though we can’t even begin to predict the nature of the surprise.
